Of course, comprehension skills are developed at different levels according to grade level. However, the same types of strategies help readers of all ages understand what they are reading. An excellent book that helps all teachers instruct comprehension strategies is 7 Keys to Comprehension by Susan Zimmermann and Chryse Hutchins. Many of the resources listed below are based on information found in 7 Keys.
Elementary School Resources

The resources below will help both students and teachers of grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 gain mastery of important reading strategies that lead to excellent comprehension skills.



  • INTO THE BOOK is a wonderful website that provides guided practice for students and resources for teachers.

Grade 8 Through College Resources

The resources below will help both students and teachers of grades 8 through college. The PowerPoints have been designed to provide information on each comprehension strategy, and the double journal entries provide practice using the strategies. Teachers can print out the PowerPoints in "Notes Pages" mode in order to retrieve notes to explain the purpose for various slides. Teachers and students have full permission to use these PowerPoints. However, please give credit to the developer of these resources.

Many of the PowerPoints and double entry journals below utilize an anonymous story entitled "The Puzzle." You can click on the name of the story to access the entire tale.
