ENG 055 Course Description: Intensive Basic Composition
This course is intensive and highly tutorial, designed to prepare students
for ENG 075: Fundamentals of Composition. This course will help develop basic
composition skills. It focuses on sentence recognition, standard mechanics and usage,
and coherent paragraph development through speaking, listening, reading, and writing
activities.
Learning activities introduce writing as a process with the following
components:
Pre-writing
Organizing
Composing
Revising or Proofreading
Editing
Publishing
These portions of the writing process will be used in writing original
paragraphs and other writings, such as journal entries. The types of paragraphs
that will be covered during this course include:
Narrative Paragraph
Descriptive Paragraph
Illustrative/Example Paragraph
Comparison and/or Contrast Paragraph
Cause and/or Effect Paragraph
Process Analysis Paragraph
Persuasion and/or Argumentation Paragraph
Paragraph development instruction will include coherence, illustration, unity, transitions,
voice, point of view, and topic sentences.
Credits from this course do not apply toward graduation. This is
a four credit course.
